Construction of the capitol took 16 years due to allegations of shortcuts in construction, substandard materials, shoddy workmanship, and bribery plus cost overruns and a legislature that was reluctant to vote for funding. The neo-classical revival building is missing some of the details in the original plans such as a glided dome. It has been restored to it’s 1915 appearance, the year that it was finished.
Guided tours are offered on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The capitol is opened 7 days a week for self guided tours. Pick up a brochure at the visitor service desk on the first floor. The public rooms are opened to tour and historic displays are located the 1st, 3rd, and 4th floors. I think Arkansas may be the only state to have a state historic cooking vessel!
The capitol is accessible. The grounds are not elaborate but there are grassy expanses with statues and memorials. A lack of sidewalks and curb cuts make viewing them difficult.
On-street parking is available on the streets to the east of the capitol. The climb up to the capitol is steep so wheelchair users may require assistance. Capitol 34.7466, -92.28857
